The $4.3 Billion Bet on the Dark
NASA's new telescope flies a mirror originally built for a spy satellite, pointed the other way.

The detail that's hard to get past: the mirror was built for a spy satellite. Some intelligence program ordered a Hubble-class mirror to point down at us, ended up not needing it, and donated it to NASA. Now it's pointed the other way.
The honest question about any of this is what a telescope changes for someone who isn't an astronomer, and the honest answer is: this week, nothing. Your job's the same. Nobody's bill goes down because dark energy got mapped. The mission's own pitch doesn't pretend otherwise, which is a point in its favor. It's a bet, placed on the record, that looking harder at the universe eventually pays. It usually has.
What the machine actually does is volume. Hubble, the most famous scientific instrument alive, collected 172 terabytes in 30 years. Roman will do 2,500 in five. A month of Roman is a century of Hubble. It's not a sharper eye, it's a census-taker, built to sweep the whole sky over and over in infrared and catch what changed.
And almost none of those 2,500 terabytes will ever be looked at by a human being. The discoveries in that pile get made by software. Whoever writes the best tools for sifting it finds the planets.
That's the thread worth pulling on, because the same thing is happening everywhere: collecting the data stopped being the hard part. Reading it is the hard part. The telescope is the part you can photograph. The leverage is in the sifting.
The name matters too. Nancy Grace Roman spent a career arguing for instruments whose value couldn't be promised in advance, and got Hubble built. They put her name on a machine that exists for people who'll be alive in 2076. Whether the bet pays is a question for fifty years from now. The part that's verifiable today is just that machines like this still get made.
